On-Demand Workshop: Getting Started with Research
Research is at the heart of numerous fields of study. You might be reading through historical sources to better understand a political movement. You might be engaging in field study of a cultural phenomenon. You might be mixing chemicals in a search for a vaccine for COVID. Whatever research you engage in, typically you will write up the results of your research, synthesizing your ideas together with research–be it from primary or secondary sources or from work done in a lab or in the field.
The work we do in this course will help you become more comfortable with documenting outside sources and synthesizing the information you locate through research into your research paper.
Purpose of This Research Assignment
The focus of our research in this course is on an issue within a group to which we belong.
We all belong to multiple groups. These groups may be official with group meetings and/or practices–for instance a track team, chess club, or Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). However, some groups may be more unofficial such as having blonde hair, being a fan of Harry Potter, or hating the taste of coffee.
For this research paper, you will each be delving into a group to which you belong, exploring an issue within this group.
The goal of the research assignment is to enhance your critical thinking skills. In doing so, you should be able to show emotional richness and/or dissonance in an issue with which you have personal involvement. In other words, the assignment calls for a full exploration and thorough analysis of your group and the issue involved. Furthermore, you will integrate outside resources (articles, web sites, interviews, etc.) using MLA research documentation to enhance your exploration of your issue.
Research Planning
We will begin the research process by brainstorming a list of groups to which we belong.
Then we will choose one group from this list and an issue within the group to explore, translating the group and its issue into a focus for research.
No, the essay is not due yet. We will choose a topic, research the topic through searches of both Valencia’s databases and the Internet, outline our research paper, write the paper, peer review the paper, and then the paper will be due. So no time soon.
What have you done so far?
You have completed the following:
brainstormed a list of ten groups to which you belong
chosen one of the groups from the brainstorm list
identified an issue within this one group–an issue on which you will conduct research
The Keyword Worksheet–uncovering research terms
The keyword worksheet document attached below will help you with the next step in this process, conducting research.
Remember, you are writing about an issue within a group to which you belong, so the key words you choose must be helpful as research terms.
Directions
1. Open this worksheet: Keyword Worksheet.. Important Note: You will complete this worksheet as you progress through the research workshop.
2. Go to the Research Workshops – Badges assignment
3. Fill in the keyword worksheet as you complete the On-Demand Workshop: Getting Started with Research in the self-enroll Canvas course. This workshop will show you, step-by-step how to complete the keyword worksheet.
The keywords are what will help you research the issue you are researching, the issue within the group to which you belong which you chose from the brainstorm list.
4. Upload the completed keyword worksheet here.
In the weeks to come, you will use the key words from this keyword worksheet to locate sources in Valencia’s databases and the Internet. Think of it as a Google search. What words would you enter in the Google field when you were trying to find an Indian restaurant? The words you type in are the key words.
