In our textbook reading this week, we learned about three ethical principals that are used by researchers to guide approaches to human subject research: autonomy, confidentiality, and beneficence (Punch, 2014, pp. 43-54). The supplemental readings raised questions of ethics in online research and specifically in the use of Big Data as a repository of digitized personally identifiable information. Christian researchers have a duty to do no harm to others, and we are encouraged throughout the scriptures to “treat” everything we do, including our research practices or the writing of our research efforts, to be honoring to the Lord (1 Corinthians 10:31). In the Old Testament book of Micah, chapter 6, verse 8 (New International Version) we are commanded to “act justly,” therefore, it is important to not only understand how to protect human subjects and the data we collect about them but also to understand why we must do so to ethically honor those individuals who place their trust in us as researchers.
Initial Thread:
First, comment generally on one of the three ethical principals mentioned in our textbook reading this week. Discuss why this principle must be upheld, and how it relates to the ethical and biblical practices of Christian researchers. Include scripture to support your response.
Then, choose one of the articles below and comment briefly on it.
The Code of Ethics adopted by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication here: http://www.aejmc.org/home/?s=code+of+ethics
What parallels do you see between our reading on ethics and the code of honor adopted by AEJMC?
The U.S. Office of Health and Human Services’ Federal Policy on Research Misconduct here: https://ori.hhs.gov/content/chapter-2-research-misconduct-introduction
How can research misconduct (defined as falsification, fabrication, and plagiarism) damage a persons credibility and place their career at risk?
Lastly, discuss what responsibilities Christian researchers have when it comes to conducting, collecting, analyzing, and reporting research data and findings?
