An analytical paper (7-10 pages) that comparatively examines gender, race and ethnicity, class, age, or other social categories of identity across the films and from at least three literary and cultural traditions, including non-Eurocentric traditions. It must address issues related to power relations and the necessity for greater equity and social justice. The paper must satisfy all of the above-stated criteria with appropriate documentation.
In the project, you need to use at least:
1. A clearly defined and formulated research question
2. EIGHT sources, TWO OF WHICH CAN BE THEORY SOURCES.
3. Two to three theories on the study of culture, race relations, and/or (post)colonialism (such as W. E. Du Bois double consciousness theory from Souls of Black Folk, Edward Saids Orientalism, and/or Cornel West’s Race Matters, or any of the theories you have learned from any classes or from you research).
4. 3/4 of the contents must come from this class; 1/4 of them can come from outside. In other words, if you use EIGHT works in the project (you can, of course, use more than 8 sources), at least SIX of them must come from our viewing and reading list.
The 6 (choose 6 from those 8) sources that come from the class are from the following films and books.
The Color Purple
A Family Thing
Huck Finn
Lone Star
Malcolm X
Mail Order Wife
Real Women Have Curves
Smoke Signals
