Scenario
Maryann Finkle is a 45-year-old female admitted to the hospital for depression and anxiety. She has a history of Hashimotos thyroiditis and has not been taking her medications. In addition, Maryanne has complained of weight gain and hair loss. She is currently living in a homeless shelter and has expressed difficulty paying for her medications. In addition, she does not have transportation to and from doctors appointments. A psych consult has been ordered.
Maryannes TSH comes back as 10 mU/I (high); her T3 is 150 ng/dL (normal) and T4 is 2 /dL (low). Due to the various symptoms, lab results, and history of Hashimotos Thyroiditis, the psychiatrist feels that her depression and anxiety stem from her thyroid dysfunction/medication noncompliance and defers to endocrinology.
