The commentaries offer you an opportunity to engage with the readings in a way that works for you. You may respond to any aspect of the reading or lecture that captivated you. It can be on anything as long as it engages with the lecture and/or the readings directly. We don’t expect the posts to be fully developed ideas and arguments, but it should not be a random collection of thoughts either. You need to take an idea or two, for example, and explore it critically. The commentaries will help you in writing and thinking critically, so use them as exercises to experiment with your analytical skills. Writing the posts will also help you formulate your thoughts about the text. The response posts will also help you participate effectively in discussions. Finally, they will make it easier for you to write your literature review paper and the final paper. The goal is to demonstrate that you have read the material and that you are asking critical questions. Feel free to ask pointed and creative questions in your commentaries – those are often the most conducive to discussion. Questions of Focus: To help guide you, consider these questions as you read: 1) What is the main point of the text? What are the underlying assumptions? 2) What are some of the moral, ethical, or political implications of the argument? Can you think of any counter-arguments? 3) What confused you or made sense about the text? Why? 4) How does the text intersect with the themes of this week’s lectures? Does it relate to any texts from previous weeks? 5) What does the historical context (i.e. when and where it was written) reveal about the text that we otherwise miss if we do not take the context into consideration?
