Reflection Instructions
Step 1: Be sure you’ve completed “Nickel and Dimed” by “Barbara Ehrenreich”.

Step 2: Consider how you might respond to these questions:
Ehrenreich found she could not survive on minimum wage — not if she wanted to live indoors. How would her experience have played out in your community today? What would a monthly budget for someone making an hourly rate at minimum wage look like in your town in 2021?
Ehrenreich identifies herself as white and middle class. She writes that her experiences might have been radically different had she been someone else. Do you agree? How would this book, or specific parts of this book, be different had Ehrenreich been a woman of color? How would it look different had she been a single parent? A man? LBTQ?
Nickel and Dimed takes place in the 1990s, a time of national prosperity in America. Do you think the author’s experiences would have been different had she wrote this book now, in today’s economy? How so?

Step 3: Pick ONE of the above questions to discuss thoughtfully in a presentation style of your choice. As with all Reflection assignments, you may offer your answer in any of these formats. Be as creative as you’d like to be!:
