What is a good essay?
Writing an essay allows you to show how you would like to think about a certain issue after having studied the texts and contexts in which this issue was/is discussed, and after having explored, analysed and evaluated various aspects of, and perspectives on, this issue in class.
Here are 5 questions writer can choose from, please let me know writer’s choice so I can send the reading list:)
1. Judaism is not the mother of Christianity; they are twins, joined at the hip (Daniel Boyarin, Borderlines, p. 5). Discuss, with reference to at least two major theories about the parting of the ways.
2. How has the story of the Binding of Isaac (the Akedah) served as a test case for claims about Jewish, Christian, and Muslim identities?
3. In the Middle Ages, most iconographic elements were based upon narratives or symbols available to Jews and Christians alike. They were utilized in ways that were occasionally similar, often different, usually dialectic or relational, and intermittently polemic. (Marc Epstein, The Medieval Haggadah, p. 268). Discuss, with at least three examples of specific art works.
4. Should Jewish converts to Christianity in the Middle Ages and Renaissance be seen as traitors or transmitters? Illustrate your answer with at least two examples of such converts.
5.During the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period, were Christian conversion to Judaism and Jewish conversion to Christianity symmetrical processes?
Is better to use footnote rather than in text (let me know if your not familiar with footnote, it’s ok)
