The docuseries Bad Sugar showed us how the Pima tribe population, through the recent generations, has been plagued with diabetes after becoming dependent on governmental benefits, which suppled free commodity foods. These processed foods are high in fat and sugar with little nutritional value and have actually started to shape the Pima culture (fry bread). Are we compromising cultural health more when we try and intervene or make things better for them? Did the government provide the best solution to this crisis? Can you find related themes from this film that correspond to Saethre’s ethnographic work regarding the Aboriginal population? What government programs or reforms could be implemented to improve health outcomes?
