In the 1970s scholars have used the Allegory of the Cave as a metaphor for the modern movie theater. Do you agree with this comparison?
THIS WAS MY RESPONSE:
Platos Allegory of the cave, metaphoric by 1970 scholars to the modern movie theater sounds just about right. I myself agree with them as well. During Platos Allegory of the Cave, it consists on prisoners chained up, looking ahead not able to move and focusing on projections made by showmen projected onto a wall through fire and diffused sunlight. Comparing it to a modern movie theater they show many similarities.
When we go into a movie theatre it is dark and we are expected to sit down and look forward without causing any distractions to others, only we arent chained up and have the ability to come and go. The showmen represent the movie film and the fire and diffused sunlight represent the projector being used for the film, and overall, the wall being the screen. Like the allegory of the cave one prisoner is released and makes his way out where he is blinded by the light. After a movie is over the lights begin too slowly turn on therefore making our eyes adjust to the new pigmentation of our surroundings. like when we first wake up in the mornining our eyes have adjusted to the dark and now focus on the light. Now, lets say a child is in the movie theater they experience everything we do but like the prisoners they believe what they see. Children especially at a young age do not know what is make believe and what is not. So overall I agree with the metaphor of the modern movie theatre to the Allegory of The Cave.
