The Essay should be 2-3 pages in length (this means from the beginning of the first line of the argument to the end of the last line of argument should be at least 2 pages and no more than 3 pages). The page count DOES NOT INCLUDE the title page, or the lines at the beginning that list the names, class name, date, etc. The Essay should be in font size 12, double spaced, with 1-inch margins on all sides. The Essay should have the following structure:
Introduction – 1 paragraph. Provide some background on the topic and state your Thesis (what position are you going to argue for).
Body – make your argument. This can happen in a few different ways. There is no one correct way. As long as you make your paper clear and organize your points well you should be fine. Here are a couple of examples of how you could structure the body of the argument.
Example 1: Explain one perspective (1 paragraph), Explain the other perspective (1 paragraph), compare both perspectives showing why you believe one is better than the other (2-3 paragraphs).
Example 2: Explain one perspective (1 paragraph), Explain strengths and weaknesses and that perspective (1-2 paragraphs), Explain the other perspective (1 paragraph), Explain strengths and weaknesses and that perspective (1-2 paragraphs), Explain why you prefer one perspective over the other (1 paragraph).
Conclusion – Recap your main points and your Thesis.
You will be graded on your:
1. Organization (follow a clear structure that makes it easy for the reader to follow your argument),
2. Writing ability (level of vocabulary, clarity of expression, sentence structure, lack of grammatical and spelling errors),
3. Argumentation (logical consistency, making good points that support your Thesis while also being consistent with common sense and facts, using good examples to illustrate your points).
