As we have continued to raise awareness about the importance of distinguishing between sex and gender and have begun to better understand social constructions of sex and gender, relevant issues have emerged to the forefront of mainstream social and political conversations. For example, legislature regarding gender identity and bathrooms have been highlighted in recent years, conversations about sex and gender have been widespread in gendered sports leagues, controversies about sex indicators of birth certificates and drivers licenses have arisen, and criticism has been raised regarding healthcare professionals’ training in treating sex or gender non-conforming patients.
