My public health topic is terrorism. I have chosen policy analysis to be my capstone option. I have been drawn to research terrorism and current policies (incarceration) that are in place. Thesis: harsher incarceration penalties should be the intervention of choice to thwart and/or punish terrorists and terrorist attacks. Statement of need: to prevent, identify, intervene, rehabilitate, and treat terrorism and its attacks, the United States, on average, mandates a thirteen-year prison term for non-violent offenses. Problem statement: terrorism can be attributed to many underlining factors and is a global issue that needs immediate attention. Research question: what are the costs associated with increased incarceration sentencing? We need to keep up with the mandates of terrorism. I have done a lot of research up until this point. Literature reviews document cases and/or the current understanding of terrorism.
The effects of specific attacks have also been investigated. A domino effect causes terrorism. Attacks have been unpreventable. With the family background being a contributory factor, one act leads to another and another (and sometimes not to societys benefit). There is a cause-and-effect paradigm that needs to be investigated. Since I needed to streamline my focus, my research focuses on terrorism and incarceration. Incarceration limits the negative effects of terrorism. The ultimate goal is rehabilitation. If that is not a possible outcome, incarceration helps to contain dangerous threats to society. Just because something bad happened to you or is happening to you, that does not make subsequent bad behavior okay. People have a responsibility to report the issue. They are not to engage in continued acts of violence or criminal activity. If the results are not what I expect, severe implications will ensue (and not just for my project). Terrorism will gain continued strength. Terrorists are not safeguarded to stop their behavior and will walk free. What is the significance of reporting? Reporting creates the opportunity for change. While we can’t always control what is happening to us, we can control how we handle the situation. We can also regulate how much or how little we will tolerate.
