The proposed study will look at the impact of childhood abuse on female serial murderers. At present, there is a dearth of research focusing on the female population of serial murderers (Wynn, Hiseth & Pettersen, 2016); therefore, the proposed study aims to identify if there are differences in the presentation of aggression between psychopathic male and female serial murderers. The proposed study will focus specifically on psychopaths as although not all serial murderers are psychopathic, psychopaths account for a disproportionate amount of the violent crimes committed each year in the US (Anderson & Kiehl, 2014). Studies (Smith, Gaconob & Cunliffe, 2020; Wynn, Hiseth & Pettersen, 2016) have identified differences in the presentation of aggression between male and female psychopaths. The proposed study predicts that abuse in childhood will affect the female serial murderers presentation of aggression, which will increase the violence shown toward their victims. Further, the proposed study seeks to identify if increased aggression affects the typology of the female serial murderer, based upon Holmes and DeBurgers (1988) four typologies. The proposed study will focus on two typologies in particular – hedonistic and control-oriented.
