This week you will read Chapters 6, 7, & 8 from Science Experiences for the Early Childhood Years: An Integrated Affective Approach by Jean D. Harlan and Mary S. Rivkin. Keep in mind that these readings will serve as the backbone for our work next week. Chapter 6: The Human Body, Chapter 7: Air, and Chapter 8: Water should be your focus for reading this week. As you read, you should highlight important points and capture information in the margins of your text book. You will be required to write a summary of the chapter that highlights the important points. This is assignment is a professional essay that is written in a voice that assumes the reader has not read the text.
A summary is:
shorter than the original
follows the same organizational pattern as the original
include the main ideas and supporting details
does not include the opinion of the author
paraphrase the original author’s text.
After you have summarized each chapter, you will include a paragraph that captures your opinions or thoughts about how the information you have gained from reading will influence your instructional practices moving forward. This is the only portion of the essay that should include your personal thoughts or opinions.
