These are the instructions we’ve been given. I’ve also included the lecture handout that has relevant references at the end, and notes from a tutorial on this topic.
Topic: Explain the Principle of Effability (or Expressibility). Is it a viable principle? Support your view with arguments and examples.
Instructions: Make sure that you explain clearly what the principle(s) is/are. You might like to include discussion of whether views of word meaning influence the topic (such as wrong format). You can leave out the discussion on the first person modes of presentation (its not an important topic)
General tips: Explain views as clearly as you can. Imagine that you are trying to explain a theory to a friend. Use examples to help illustrate and explain the points you make.
Please use fresh examples rather than simply repeating examples taken from the lectures. This will show more clearly your own independent thinking.
When explaining a view, try also to explain what motivates the view. Say why a theorist thinks that such-and-such is the case.
Don’t just quote a theorist without explaining the quotation the examiner needs to see your understanding of the points that you are reporting on.
If you criticize a view, try to think how a supporter of the view might respond.
Readings: For readings, see the relevant lecture handouts. If you can find relevant new readings, that is excellent. But this is certainly not required, even for the very best essays. Clarity and interesting analysis is what we are looking for.
