You may choose to focus on a character, although NOT Tim OBrien, as he is too large and found in too many stories. Norman Bowker, Mitchell Sanders, Rat Kiley, or Kiowa might make nice papers. Explore what the character represents through what he carries and what his function is in the story. What point does the fiction make about the war through this character? Does the character change? What is the eventual fate of the character and what is this trying to say about the war?
Write an introduction that provides a little historical background about the Vietnam War. This will require a little bit of research, but not a lot. Just have some facts that will help provide a context for the points you want to make about the war.
Lead up to a thesis that provides a topic, a theme or themes, and points: in other words, your thesis should tell me what you intend to prove about what this book is saying about its themes. Your themes need to connect to the larger social themes of war, violence, masculinity, etc, but can also look at the importance of stories, friendships and other things that heal and keep us alive.
Backs up the points in your thesis BY USING THE POETIC TOOLS. If your paper doesnt speak about imagery, word choice, and figurative language, it will not score well. Comments about sound and syntax will not be considered strictly necessary, but they are probably necessary if you are aiming for an A. OBrien does make interesting syntactical choices and uses sound devices all the time.
