Write a paper that traces the stylistic development of Rembrandt. Discuss and analyze fully three (3) specific works of by your chosen artist: 1.) The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulip, 1632; 2.) The Night Watch, 1642 and 3.) The Syndics of the Cloth Guild, 1662.

In addition to researching your artist I expect you to do your own thinking and arguing. The connections and conclusions you draw should be your own, based on close observation of the works and your research. It is not enough merely to present information. You are expected to make a coherent argument about your artist’s development based on your research and analysis. General introductions and encyclopedia-entry type subjects are unacceptable.

B. Paper must include page numbers after page 1.
C. Paper must include the bibliography at the end.
D. Copies of the pages cited in your paper’s footnotes: Use a highlighter and label each quoted passage on your photocopy. Write the corresponding footnote from your paper next to the highlighted passage on the photocopy. Label the photocopy in the upper right hand corner with the authors name and the title of the article or book.
E. Papers must be double-spaced.
F. Follow the CMS manuscript style demonstrated in College-required A Writer’s Reference, by Diana Hacker.
G. Your paper must have documented images of each work you discuss.

Content Requirements:
a. The paper must fulfill the assignment as given.

b. The paper must have a thesis, an introduction, a conclusion, and should be developed logically from point to point with clear argument.

c. Spelling, punctuation and grammar must be correct. Edit and proofread carefully. Papers with numerous proofreading errors will receive no higher than a “C.”

d. All sources for unique information, ideas, or quotations must be footnoted Chicago Manual Style. Papers with inadequate and/or improper citation will receive a grade of 0. General knowledge concerning a topic and your own analysis of an artwork do not need footnoting. Giving credit to your authors is important. Not giving credit is plagiarism. A research paper or assignment that is composed mostly of unacknowledged sources will be treated as a case of plagiarism. Cases of plagiarism will result in 0 for the paper and the student will be referred to the Campus Academic Standards Committee so that the plagiarism is documented in the students permanent academic and conduct records.

e. Papers will be graded for quality of research. A minimum of two specific books in addition to articles from well-established art journals are expected. Online journals are acceptable so long as they are properly cited including page number(s) from the journal. The depth and relevance of your materials in relation to your topic must be thorough.

f. General Internet web pages are not appropriate sources for this academic research paper. Of course, you are ENCOURAGED to use our library databases to locate your materials.

g. You may not use or cite your textbook or my lectures as a source for this paper.
