I try to practice self-awareness whenever I feel like there was a situation that happened where I could have responded differently. Many times, this happens with things at work and the kids I work with. The way that I choose to practice self-awareness is a high write down what happened and then return to it a few hours later to see if I still feel that the way I responded in that moment would still be the same choice I would make. If I find myself thinking that I should have responded a different way, then I try to work through what emotions in that situation led me to that choice and if there is a way to steer myself in a different direction next time. I think many times people choose two just move past the situation without ever analyzing their own actions to see if it was appropriate at that point in time. This can lead people to a false sense of security in thinking that they are doing their best and that there is nothing they can do to change or improve. I think that we all have the ability to self-reflect and become self-aware to help us not only in our work life but in our personal life also.

I found an article that references how self-reflective journaling can serve as a way to increase self-awareness and professional growth. It can help a person increase their perceptions of not only themselves but of their actions. There were a few different themes that emerged from the adults studied that had submitted their journals. The themes were what they learned, becoming aware, personal growth among colleagues, and letting themselves feel the pain. Many times, journaling can help us not only experience a situation fully but reflect and then move on from it (Williams, Gerardi, Gill, Soucy, & Taliaferro, 2009).
