You must write a response piece/thinkpiece/journal entry (whichever name you prefer – they tend to be used interchangeably) to analyze the primary source you just viewed. The response will be about 300 words.
A few things to note:
You may go over 300 words, but going under is almost always bad news
You should be very CLEAR which question you are answering.
It is okay to say “I” or “we” and be informal in that manner, and (especially in the one question that asks for more present thinking) think about the present, but your response must still be intellectually vigorous
Check out the rubric for more details on grading! The key areas you must hit are: critical thinking, evidence from document(s), understanding of the larger context
Please address ONE of the questions below in a 300-ish word response.
What misconceptions about Black Americans does Baldwin think Cavett and other white Americans have, and how does he correct them?
Where does Baldwin fall on the integration versus separatism spectrum of 1960s race politics, and why is this his position?
What is the context of this 1969 interview? Explain why the tensions around this interview would be so great, given some of the events of the late 1960s?
How have Baldwins words aged? Do his words speak to the present? [remember to still engage with the video source, even if writing more about the present]
