This reflection assignment asks you to take a deep dive into one of the assigned readings or topics for this course. You are being asked to demonstrate your understanding of an article, and to further demonstrate your critical understanding of it. Task one is to choose an article from the assigned readings that you are interested in and willing to spend some time with. Your ‘Long Reflection’ assignment will summarize the article (to demonstrate your understanding of the content and the argument), and will critically examine or evaluate it through the lens of your own experience or a comparison. With that in mind, you have three different ‘topic’ options:
Option A: “I found an example!” Summarize and explain an article from the assigned readings, and critically evaluate it using an outside example of your own choosing. Select a text or article or personal experience (anonymized as appropriate) from outside class that provides insight into one of the theories or issues of freedom, equality, and/or limits of authority that we have covered in this course. This might be a scholarly work, a news article, or any fiction or non-fiction work. Use the example to critically examine the course text that you have chosen. What is important about the text? What does the example reveal about the text? How is the text clarified or problematized by the example?
