What is an annotated bibliography?

An annotated bibliography is a list of cited sources about a particular topic in which a citation is followed by a brief paragraph that discusses three levels of the sources relevance: summary, evaluation, and commentary. The annotated bibliography is useful for documenting your research in a specific area, exploring varying viewpoints, and summarizing the main points from different sources. An annotated bibliography’s formatting requirements vary significantly from one documentation style to another and correspond to various academic disciplines. Several documentation styles are used within the Humanities: English and Literary Studies, MLA; Journalism, APA; History, Chicago Style; Sociology, APA, etc. For this course (English 132, English 230, or English 231), MLA is the proper documentation style that students should follow.

There are two parts to every entry in an annotated bibliography: the citation and the annotation.

The Citation:

The citation includes the bibliographic information of the source. The documentation style required for all English courses is MLA (The Modern Language Association). To successfully complete the annotated bibliography assignment, you must follow appropriate MLA guidelines and instructions included in an attached MLA Documentation packet. All citations and annotations should be organized alphabetically by the authors last name.

Sample Journal Citation in MLA format:

Gilbert, Pam. From Voice to Text: Reconsidering Writing and Reading in the English Classroom. English Education, vol 23, no. 4, 1991, pp. 195-211.

The Annotation:

The annotation is approximately three-quarters of a page and must include the following elements: summary, evaluation, and commentary.

The Purpose of the Annotation:

The annotation of a source can serve several different purposes; however, for this assignment, your annotations will require the following:

Summary
Describe the content and source by identifying the thesis statement and major supporting points of the article.
Evaluation
Evaluate the credibility of the source.
Evaluate and discuss the credibility and background of the author.
Identify the relevance and usefulness of the material.

Commentary
Evaluate and express your reaction to the source.
Evaluate and express how this source is relevant to your research topic.
Express how you intend to use the source in your research paper.

As you write annotations, include a summary of the source, an evaluative assessment of the authors argument, and a commentary about how the source is relevant to your topic. Each entry should be at least of a page. The length of each entry is often linked to the length of the source.
The format should list the appropriate citation for the media source type, and then the appropriate annotation followed by the next entry. The author’s last name should alphabetize all entries, and the entire document should be double-spaced.
After completing all of your entries, you will write a statement of scope, that is, a brief introductory statement to explains the topic you are covering. This statement might be one or two paragraphs that should establish the context of bibliography, and announce your purpose for
