Submit your poetry explication here. This is the major essay for the section on poetry. It is a documented essay, so plan to do a little research and bring in some outside sources, things that others have written about the poem. THIS IS NOT A BIOGRAPHY. If you bring in any biograpy, it should be used to illustrate something in the poem. Do not use blogs or sites like Cliff Notes. Try to find something a bit more professional. Our library can help, but you can also likely find what you need using Google Scholar as the search engine. Bring in at least two outside sources in addition to the poem itself, so I should see at least three entries in your references page as well as three or more documented references in your essay. We will use APA style for the research essay. English classes traditionally have used MLA style, but most other disciplines use APA. We will use APA to help prepare you for those other classes. If you are a declared English major and you prefer to use MLA, let me know and that will also be fine. Pick ONE of the options listed in this section for the explication. The essay should be 800-1000 words plus the references page. Use 12 point font and double space. Include a title page, abstract, body of the essay with citations, and the references page. You do not need charts or other visuals. You may use subheadings if you wish, but they are not required. Write your essay with a persuasive/argumentative edge. Argue for something in your thesis. For example, you could argue that the poem reveals something important about the writer’s personal life, and then you would need to bring in something from a biography to make that connection. You could argue that the poem reveals an important theme that is often addressed in the writer’s works, and then you would need to bring in some other poems showing how they also deal with this theme. You could argue that the poem is a typical example of a writer’s style, and then show how the writer does similar things in other poems. The exact topic is up to you, but put an argumentative edge on it. You are welcome to send me an idea if you feel you need to do so. Include an abstract, title page, and References list in APA style. Be sure to document sources in the essay.
