For this assessment, students will be developing their writing skills. presentation skills and their ability to analyse communications texts.
Individually, collect 1 2 real world examples of professional communications texts and/or technical writing to present to your peers. Look for related texts so that your presentation has a clear overall theme/focus. Think creatively when collecting your texts in order to best engage your audience!
Example: brochures, pamphlets, posters, advertising, websites, labels, manuals, rsums, bills, letters, emails, etc. that serve professional communication purposes.
Using PowerPoint (or other similar presentation software), critique the texts using the theories discussed in week 1 (i.e. the Big Three: reader centredness, usability, persuasiveness). Explain why these texts are effective or problematic, being sure to explain why any identified problems matter, and how you would choose to fix them as a professional and technical writer. Your solutions should make the text more professional and effective in serving its original purpose(s). You will be assessed on your ability to identify the success and/or problems in the chosen texts, explain clearly why they are problems in relation to the Big Three, and suggest ways to improve the text.
Display the texts so your audience see them clearly (e.g. on your PowerPoint slides/enlarged photocopies/hand out copies)
Each student should speak for 34 minutes. Ensure that you demonstrate the application of relevant theories. To this end, you may want to divide the presentation so that you discusses one text, or one theory at a time.
