Lifelong Learning and Striving for What Is Around the Corner

Brook has had quite a nursing career! As he reflects on the past 15 years, Brook is surprised at himself for having accomplished so much in such a short period of time and at such a young age. He graduated at 21 with a bachelors of science in biological sciences, and then decided that he had wasted the last 4 years of his life earning a degree in an area that he did not want to work. Considering all of his possible career options and dabbling for a year in pharmaceutical sales, Brook decided to apply to a second degree nursing program to become a nurse. He had always been interested in the healthcare field and assumed that after he received his BS he might return to graduate school in pharmacy, public health, or healthcare administration. He had not really considered nursing before, but the idea became more and more intriguing to Brook. Perhaps he was influenced by the recent illness and death of his mother, and observing the compassionate care that she had received sparked an interest in his soul. He watched the nurses and admired their knowledge and competence coupled with sincere compassion when caring for his mother and other patients. He had not realized before how much science that nurses are exposed to in their education, but in talking with them he realized that his own background in biological sciences would be a great platform for a new career in nursing. It was a great choice for Brook, and he not only obtained a masters degree in nursing in the second degree program, but he also made a firm decision that he would continue on in his education.

His first job as a nurse was not only stimulating but also absolutely invigorating to his spirit. He loved every minute working with the patients, his colleagues, and the physicians. He worked as a clinical nurse in the surgical intensive care unit initially, but after a year, he asked to be transferred to the emergency department (ED). He loved the pace and the constant challenge of the ED, and he recognized and appreciated the physical and emotional challenges that his patients faced as they came into this unknown and often threatening environment. Every day he left work feeling that hed made a positive difference for his patients, and he felt good about himself. Yes, life was good . . . but he yearned for something more. He asked himself, Am I crazy, or what?

Brook enrolled in a doctor of nursing practice (DNP) program, and although he thoroughly enjoyed exposure to the class content, he also found it challenging to be a full-time student and a full-time clinical nurse. The hours were long, and he had to make every minute count to keep up with the volumes of reading material, long practicum hours, and his work in the ED. At times he was completely and utterly exhausted and spent emotionally and physically.

Brook took every opportunity during the semester breaks to take paid leave from the hospital and to travel. He went hiking in the Grand Canyon, spent a week on the beach in Hawaii, and took a fun trip with friends backpacking around Europe. After these excursions he felt refreshed and renewed, eager for school to start, and ready return to work. He asked himself, Am I crazy, or what?

It did not seem long until Brook graduated with his DNP. The degree opened several new career opportunities, and Brook landed a phenomenal position in the San Francisco Bay area as the director of research and professional development for the emergency services of a large healthcare system with hospitals throughout northern California. It was a great position with many challenges but strong leadership and resources to ensure his success in such a role. Brook had the opportunity to work with other directors to lead one hospital on its Magnet journey and to facilitate meaningful evidence-based practice projects and research studies to improve patient outcomes in the emergency service experience. It was an exciting time in Brooks personal and professional life for a few years, but it was not long until he felt restless again. He could not believe that he felt motivated to go back to school to earn his PhD in nursing. He asked himself, Am I crazy, or what?

Brook admired several of his PhD-prepared colleagues and their depth of knowledge about research. Although the DNP prepared him to use research evidence in practice, he yearned for a greater depth of understanding about research, statistics, and the entire qualitative and quantitative research processes and theory development. So, Brook applied and was accepted into the PhD program, and he continued his career while earning his PhD. Reflecting back, he never would have guessed that this would be the path his nursing career followed, yet he appreciates all that he has learned about himself in his formal educational experiences and in his real-life experiences caring for patients and their families in his nursing role. Brook realizes that he arrived at this point in his life and career by living in the potential as well as the reality of his life. It has not been an easy path, but he feels that he is a better person for having taken the journey. He can honestly say that he feels inner peace with the decisions that he made and the path that he chose.
