Pride and Prejudice Literary Analysis Essay

You are a historian.
History is often viewed through the lens of stories, generalizing the experiences of all people who lived in that era. This is not always an accurate portrayal of human history.
This text, while fictional, gives a glimpse into a historic era, its society, and its culture. It is a participant in a dynamic and changeable culture, that just like today, was supported and criticized by its population.
In your five-paragraph essay, analyze the social and cultural norms of the era that Jane Austen uses irony to identify and criticize. Consider what was thought to be important to people (especially the wealthy), and support your analysis of Jane Austens point of view on these ideas.
Pay attention to things that Mrs. Bennet (Elizabeths mother), Lady Catherine, Caroline Bingley, and Mr. Darcy consider to be socially acceptable or unacceptable.
Pay attention to how social opinion shapes the futures of characters, especially women (e.g. younger sisters being unable to enter society if the older sisters are not married, one sisters reputation ruining the entire family, etc.)
Create a thesis statement around your thoughts that answer these questions:
How does this text contribute to or shape the understanding of the culture it represents?
Did Jane Austen agree with the social conventions and norms that the 19th-century wealthy considered important?
What criticisms of culture do you see highlighted in the text?
What do you know about Jane Austens real-life that may have directly influenced her writing?
