Examine three poems written by that
one author. One poem must come from our syllabus; the other two you will have to find on your own, whether in our textbook, online (see below) or in other collections of poetry. In your essay, make an argument about how best to approach this writers work as exemplified by the three poems you have selected.
Focus on the core concepts discussed and described in our textbook. For example, you could look at the use of visual imagery in your poems aided by Mays work in Picturing: Visual Imagery and Figures of Speech (Mays 577-588). Regardless of what poet and poems you select, identify a pattern that helps you treat the poems as the work of a single artist. In addition, you can support and deepen your analysis by using an article/essay by a scholar like those you found in the databases for your Work Cited assignment.
Use clear, documented illustrations from the poems in order to analyze (or explicate) how the poems work. Along the way, your essay may discuss what the poems mean, but the paper should not simply summarize the ideas in the poems. The goals of the essay are to recognize the strategies used by the poet, to develop individual understanding of the poems, and to build an appreciation for the work of the poet.
The essay must be approximately 3 pages double-spaced in 12-point font and follow MLA formatting and include a Work Cited page. The essay must also have an original title that reflects its idea or its argument.
