Many of you have probably seen the movie The Color Purple and possibly the Broadway production produced by Oprah. I wish you could all see the production on stage. Not only is it an amazing musical, it’s interesting to see themes such as the lesbian relationship between Celie and Shug celebrated on stage. If you go to Youtube and type in The Color Purple musical, you can see some of the production numbers. One of the songs the character Celie sings called “I’m here” is simply beautiful. Now to the questions: Discuss why the use of dialect is so important to The Color Purple. Were there any passages that were hard to understand? Who do you think emerges as the hero/heroine of the novel? Give support. Do you think the character of Celie changes over the course of the novel? How would you characterize her evolution? We will rely primarily on this text as well as Woman Warrior for our last paper, and I will ask you to develop some of these questions.
