Your response paper should begin with a short (one paragraph) summary of the text you are responding to. Think of this as a mini-abstract, in which you introduce your reader to the research question, methodology and main findings of the paper. Following this, the rest of your response paper should move beyond summary to engage with the text in a critical way. This might involve doing one of the following:
Critiquing some element of the work
Putting the text into conversation with another reading (if you do this, be careful to ensure you dont simply describe differences between the two readings you must make a critical argument)
Using a case study to challenge or illuminate some aspect of the argument
Remember that your response paper must make an argument, and should not simply summarize and describe.
Note: If you have written a response paper on one of these articles for the extra credit assignment, you may not use the same article. Similarly, if you have previously written a response paper for the protest article (Mueller 2013) in my Protests and Social Movements class (Fall 2019 or 2020) you may not use the same article.

Provide a clear thesis statement (argument)

I have attached the required sources here. For the first prompt, I would like to respond to the Paper piece “The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism.” For the second prompt, I would like to address the question “Why do people protest?” and I have attached the required six academic sources that must be cited (feel free to use more if you are knowledgable on the subject). This class is extremely liberal and I would like for these responses to be strong leftist views with plenty of critical thinking. Please do not just recap the material (though in the response paper, please do begin with a brief summary of the academic paper in the first paragraph). My strongest critique from this professor is the need for a strong thesis. I am thinking something along the lines of “People protest to demand change that results in the advancement of human rights.” This class focuses heavily on international relations, and we have studied case studies in Uganda, Yemen, Sierra Leone, Nirbhaya, among others.
