ASSIGNMENT TASK
In July 2020, Mintel reported that tightened safe distancing measures require staff and consumers to minimise contact with one another, and pub/bar operators have had to think of new ways to engage with customers and accept bookings and transactions. Greene King and J.D. Wetherspoon had already launched apps prior to the crisis, which will continue to serve the pub chains both in enhancing pub dining experiences and meeting current safe distancing measures.
More recent contactless tableside ordering apps spurred on by COVID-19 include Stonegate Pub Companys My Pub app launched in June 2020, as seen in App Store and Google Play. It features an Order & Pay option, which allows customers to order at the table in any Stonegate Pub Companys pubs and Slug & Lettuce.
Deliveroo also updated its food ordering app in July 2020 to include a Table Service feature for customers to browse the menu, order and pay at any participating restaurants. Given that Deliveroo will not take commission from orders placed through this app function, this should encourage widespread adoption amongst both restaurants and pubs (Mintel – Attitudes towards Pub Catering, July 2020)
With the full and lasting impact of Covid on pub and bar businesses still to be seen, some parts of the sector have shown themselves able to diversify and react to unprecedented challenges. It seems that pubs and bars that have been able to provide safe environments when not in lockdown, take advantage of food and drink off-sales and embrace technology, have shown higher levels of resilience by developing a Plan B.
Drawing on research you undertake, you are required to write an essay that evaluates the current operating environment and suggest what approaches pubs and bars can adopt in order to bounce back from enforced closures and once again build strong businesses within the confines of the new normal.
Please submit your essay as an anonymous WORD document only
TASK GUIDANCE
It is expected that references to texts will include mostly those available in the UCB library or available via UCB e-resources. When dealing with this subject area, it is suggested that you:
begin your essay with an introduction that presents a brief overview of how the pub and bar sector has been affected by the impact of Covid and what periods of lockdown have meant to businesses have all lockdowns been the same and have all bars been affected in the same way, for example (300 400 words)
present a thorough evaluation of what pubs and bars have been able to do during the past year that may provide a basis for building business when the sector finally re-opens will future resilience be built on a wider uptake of technology, for example, an extension of a food offer or maybe closer attention paid to trend identification such as increased interest in all-things vegan, flexitarianism and teepartialism you choose what direction you would like to take your evaluation and whether or not you focus on pub companies or smaller independent pubs and bars
within this section, you should provide additional context for your essay by including an evaluation of the Mintel quote used in the remit what is it saying and what are its implications? At the same time, use a range of pub and bar examples drawn from your research that illustrate what you are discussing while supporting what you are suggesting the post-lockdown pubscape will look like (1000 1300 words)
draw together the main points of your discussion and present them as insightful and balanced conclusions – do not introduce any new information in the conclusions. What does the future hold in relation to the longer-term survival of the type of pubs and bars you have been looking at and based on what you have researched and discussed? (300 400 words)
throughout your essay, try to continually tie in what you are discussing by making reference to the main elements of the essay, including reference to the Mintel report used here and similar reports these, and trade magazines such as the Morning Advertiser and The Caterer are a good source of up-to-date and focused information
you will be assessed for this essay using the Generic Marking Criteria for Level 5 work and the marking scheme below shows how marks will be allocated:
Structure and presentation of your essay (10%)
Your essay must be appropriately structured having the sections outlined above, following presentation guidelines and show clear evidence of proof-reading and grammar-checking
Content and understanding (30%)
You should demonstrate evidence of knowledge and understanding of the pub and bar sector and key areas of research suggested within the remit and task guidance – this may be achieved through extensive reading and supporting what you are saying through the use of sources
Evaluation and discussion (40%)
Your evaluation and discussion of the key research areas need to direct the essay (what are your ideas about how the sector moves forward, for example) and must, again, be supported and developed through use of suitable sources. You must avoid your work being descriptive where use of one or no supporting references are used when evaluating your business-building options or ideas
Research, reading and referencing (20%)
You should make use of resources recommended within the module reading list and others that are pub and bar focused this includes use of appropriate journal articles and contemporary information sources. In all cases, only sources available in the UCB library or available via UCB e-resources may be used. Prescription for the need to keep information sources narrow will benefit your research activity as a whole by ensuring that your research effort remains focused. At the same time, you must follow UCB referencing standards in your essay.
