Papers should be 5-7 pages , with standard formatting (Times New Roman, 12pt., 1 margins, double-spaced). Your paper should begin with only your name and the title of your paper at the top of the first page. No title page or additional information (course number, instructor name, date) is required. These guidelines mean that your essay must be at least 5 full pages of writing. Submitted essays will be re-formatted to these standards and those that do not fulfill the page/word count guidelines will be marked down severely.
As with all assignments in this course, no outside research is required for the analytical papers, nor should it be used . All the materials you will need can be found in the textbook, lectures and supplemental readings posted to Blackboard. The purpose of these assignments is not to evaluate your ability to perform academic research; instead, you are being evaluated on your ability to read, write, and think critically about a set of historical materials. Use of outside sources including Wikipedia, biography sites, and online dictionaries is strictly prohibited.
Since your papers are based on a limited number of sources all related to course materials, no works cited page is necessary. Including one does not count toward the 5-7 pages required for the assignment.
( Only use the sources that are provided)
Citing Sources in Your Writing
No Citations = Plagiarism. Due to the importance of evidence and examples in analytical writing, effective citation of sources is vital. All ideas, data, quotations, arguments, and opinions that are not produced by you must be cited. This includes paraphrased information as well. In academia especially, plagiarism is the gravest form of academic misconduct. It is better to over-cite an essay than to present information without attribution.
In your papers and forum posts, all evidence must be cited, including both quotations and paraphrase. Sources may be cited using the following short format for this class (with the relevant information filling in the brackets in the template], with these citations coming at the end of sentences that contain referenced material:
For a reference from The Struggle for Black Equality on pg. 154: (Sitkoff, 154)
For a reference from Supplemental Reading: ([Authors Last Name], [pg. #])
For a reference from a Module: (Module [Unit #].[Module #].[Page #])
For a reference from a Document Collection: ([Document Authors Last Name], [paragraph #])
For a reference from a Unit Announcement: (Announcement, [Date])
Specifics for different supplemental readings, modules, and primary source documents are also provided in the background/intro information provided in those sections of Blackboard. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
