Pick a “Media Mogul” who has made a lasting contribution to his or her respective industry. Choice of subject must be approved by the professor. The paper should include a detailed biography of the person, his or her background, influences and interests in their lives, etc. Then outline the persons career and their rise through his/her chosen industry (and how they came to choose it). The paper should include a detailed discussion of business strategies, innovative techniques and creative insight the person employed to fundamentally make them deserving of the moniker Media Mogul.
Discuss other people in the field, both colleagues and competitors working at the time of your media mogul. Discuss how your person of choice worked with or competed against those people. Who was their nemesis, their idols, their allies. To give context to this section, include an overview of what the industry was like when this person worked in it. What was the predominant type of entertainment being produced during the time your media mogul worked in the industry? How did your subject enrich as well as alter it? Who were their primary competitors if any? How novel and long last was their contribution to the industry?
Define as best you can this persons big idea, or genius if you will. What could he or she see (or predict happening in the industry) that others did not anticipate or see as clearly as your media mogul did? How was he/she able to implement their vision?
In the next section of the paper: Pick a 21st century media mogul and compare and contrast them to your subject of choice. How are they similar in vision and working methodologies? How are they different? (eg.. Thomas Edison vs. Steve Jobs)
After comparing and contrasting your two choices as media moguls, discuss the similarities and differences you found between the moguls and their respective companies. (Examples: Walt Disney/Disney Company, Steve Jobs/Apple, Mary Pickford/United Artists, Oprah Winfrey/Harp Productions, Walter Paley/CBS, Mark Zuckerberg/Facebook)
The final paper breakdown should be roughly as follows: 40% of the paper should be spent on the 20th Century Media Mogul and their company, 40% of the paper should be spent the 21st Century Media Mogul and company and 20% comparing and contrasting the visions, tactics and outcomes between the two of them.
