Abnormal Psychology: Instruction for the Research Paper
Concept: By having a writing assignment, the student is able to learn the process of researching, analyzing and writing information.
Having an assignment of researching a mental disorder allows the student to select a disorder within a category that there may be specific interest in and be able to obtain further information about that disorder.
Requirement: Research Paper: Select any disorder that is in the diagnostic system. That may be a disorder that was covered in class, or a disorder that is in the diagnostic system but not covered in class. Select the disorder that interests you most.
The paper should include the same three sections the course information covered when providing information about previous disorders (see below). When doing the third section of the paper on treatment you should note that most disorders are most often treated with both psychotherapy and psychiatric medication. Your research on treatment should cover both of these types of treatment.
1. Description of the disorder: Do a narrative description of the symptoms or behavior patterns that would explain to someone what this disorder would appear like.
2. Causation of the disorder: Explain what is known about causation of the disorder i.e. biological, psychological or socio-cultural influences.
3. Treatment of the disorder: What type of treatment is effective for this disorder i.e. psychotropic medication and or psychotherapy (what type of therapy)? You may also include what is known about the percentage of successful treatment of this disorder.
Style: Use at least three sources for your paper. Your sources are to be listed on a separate page at the end of the paper. (Your sources should be other than your textbook or the Notebook for the course). If you use internet sources, they should be credible academic sources. Include Title page to your paper. Your paper should be approximately three and a half to four pages in length (plus the title and bibliography page). Use twelve font and one inch borders. Make sure that your name is on the Title page
