Amiri Baraka A Poem for Black Hearts
Jimmy Santiago Baca Jobs from Americans
Sherman Alexie On the Amtrak from Boston to New York City
Each of these poems and poets is attempting to present a very specific picture of American life from very different perspectives. For this essay, you will pick ONE poem and make an argument about how the author comments on life in America from a specific perspective. You will need to address (1) how the author conveys this message (i.e. using poetry terms from lectures as evidence) and (2) specifically identify what this message is. Your argument should be comprised of a technical analysis of the authors work while showing how these poetic elements support your claim about how the author feels about this country.
Make sure to spend your first paragraph introducing the topic and the content at hand.
Include a thesis statement with a definitive claim (i.e. your viewpoint) and the reasons of support here. Your viewpoint should be a definite statement of the message/commentary the author is providing.
Body paragraphs can be divided up how you see fit, but please make sure that you organize your paragraphs according to topics (i.e. the different poetic elements you see).
A conclusion where you reiterate points here.
No less than 800 words of written material.
At least one scholarly source used for supporting your key points (more than one is fine, but not using sources will result in a significant point deduction).
Proper MLA citation and works cited.
