For our final paper, you will need to write an original essay of no fewer than 7 complete pages. Your essay should present and support a strong, complex thesis statement of your own. This paper must engage with Food Savers or Food Saviors? Food Waste, Food Recovery Networks, and Food Justice, Why Bother? and at least 3 outside sources you found through research. In addition to those 5 sources, you may always include a personal example, experience, reference, etc., as your ideas are the core of your work.
The focus and direction of this paper will depend on your interests and your research, but some jumping off points are:
Climate justice: how do we achieve it? What would it look like?
Climate justice and economic justice: how are they connected? How do we achieve them? What would they look like?
Climate justice and racial justice: how are they connected? How do we achieve them? What would they look like?
Activism: is it worth it? What is the most effective way to get involved in a cause? How do individuals make a difference? What do you conclude about the best approach for individuals to take when addressing global challenges?
Combatting climate change: Pollan argues that to make an impact on climate change, citizens will have to begin understanding their relationship to the world differently. What should we be doing, as individuals, small businesses, large corporations, and state, national, and international governing bodies, to slow and combat ever-worsening climate change? How & why would your suggestions work? Anticipate and address counterarguments to your proposals. (If change were easy, more of us would do it, after all.)
Food insecurity: what are food deserts? What are we currently doing to combat hunger in our communities, our nation at large, and on a global scale? Is it working? What could we be doing better?
The relationship between the environment and our current food system: Leda Cooks is interested in the connection between environmental sustainability and our food systems. Pollan and Cooks argue that changing our dietary habits can improve our health and the health of the planet. Which changes do you think are most pressing, given the evidence you have learned in these pieces? What challenges do you see, and how do you suggest addressing them? What might individuals still do as food consumers?
