Listen carefully to the following episode of the podcast Hidden Brain, “Creating God (https://www.npr.org/2018/07/16/628792048/creating-god)” (which later re-aired as “Where Does Religion Come From? One Researcher Points To ‘Cultural’ Evolution”).

Then write a 1000 word essay that includes a paragraph on each of the following:
1. Summarize the evolutionary theory of religion described in the podcast (what aspects of religion does the theory seek to explain? what explanations does it offer?).
2. Discuss this theory as an example of a functionalist approach to religion (what specific functions does it identify?).
3. Compare this approach to an insider’s perspective (how does an insider’s perspective differ? does this theory necessarily undermine or falsify an insider’s understanding of religion?).
