Plagues and Peoples in History
Primary Source Analyses (50%)
You will choose five (5) weeks for which you will submit a 2-3 page primary source analysis based on the sources provided in Hammond, Epidemics and the Modern World. Instructions for each weeks analysis will be given in the recorded lecture, and the assignment will be due exactly one (1) week later (due dates are provided on the syllabus). Students are advised to read ahead and take thorough notes ahead of time to enable you to focus during this week on the written analysis itself. Your focus should be on analyzing the assigned primary sources in historical context, based on information gleaned from the text and lectures.
This Week#9
Using “3000 Have Influenza at Devens” (pp. 338-339) and “Letter from Camp Devens Mass” (339-340), analyze the social and cultural significance of influenza in these sources. How and why do they differ in their representation of 1918-1919 influenza pandemic?
Week #8 feedback from teacher, please try to improve from these comments.
This is a good first paper. I have annotated the document directly, but here are some general comments for future work: Please try to be rigorous about citations. You often start paragraphs by citing a page from the book, but every sentence that introduces information from the book needs a separate citation. You cannot assume that the reader will group all information in a whole paragraph from a citation in just one of its sentences. Youve got an analytical approach, which is welcome, but Id like to see you push more on that. Ask yourself questions like so what? and use that to extrapolate what the sources can tell us about what life was like in the past. Prof. Bil has said that these analyses should only use lectures or the Hammond book, so please dont introduce other sources. The format youve used for the papers is good. Its nice to see a strong thesis statement at the beginning. Overall, this is a good first paper. Tightening up the language and pushing deeper on the analysis will help get higher marks. Letter grade: B.
