Think now about what the authors are saying – their arguments – their evidence and read ‘against’ these as a critic. You may refer to external situations but the focus of your response should be the work itself. You may not ask authors to do work they have not intended, as would be outlined in abstracts, for example. If you think the work should have covered something more or different questions could have been asked – include this criticism in your response as a suggestion for future research.
Do not ignore the tables, figures, or graphs in any article you read. See if they make sense to you — if the authors have made the purpose of their inclusion clear and if the data presented add to the authors’ arguments.
