Recording of Syllabus Part 3 Capstone Plan
3.B. Chapter 1
(1 point)
___ write an introductory paragraph. The first paragraph in Chapter 1 is simply an introduction paragraph that sets the stage for your topic. It does not have a heading. Keep the bolded headings intact and write your own text underneath each one. Delete the instructions afterwards and submit a clean (only with your own work) document in Blackboard.
Background of the Study
(2 points)
___ the background of the study is what led you to recognize your topic as an important one in TK-12 classrooms on a larger scale. The Background of the Study should contain two citations to support your thoughts. These citations should only come from peer-reviewed journal articles published within the last ten years.
Statement of the Problem
(1 point)
___ the statement of the problem is an area of concern that exists in classrooms or schools that interests you as an educator. It is not dependent on you doing any research; it can be found in many classrooms. However, it may be a problem that you encounter with your own students. See Assignment 1 of SPD695 to get you started.
Purpose of the Study
(1 point)
___ the purpose of this study is to teach a NEW measurable behavior (skill); it should not be about decreasing undesired behaviors (where we can use behavior management strategies, which were targeted in earlier courses).
___ the purpose of the study has to match your research question like a mirror image, so the same verbiage you use in the purpose of the study has to also appear in your research question.
Audience
(1 point)
___ who will benefit from your findings?
Significance of the Study
(2 points)
___ in one paragraph, describe why your proposed research is important. Address how your study will expand our current understanding or fill gap in the research literature.
___ explain why your study will be important to its targeted population or other educators who are teaching your targeted population. What is the impact of your study if it were to be carried out and published – who would care and why? You will support your one or two main ideas about it importance with two APA citations from peer-reviewed articles or scholarly books, published in the last 10 years.
Research Question
(2 points)
___ state your RQ in a question format. Use the required format of your Capstone RQ. You are not trying to identify which interventions are best, etc. Instead, you should have already decided on an intervention, model, strategy, or instruction to research more in-depth in this course.
___ you can add in your RQ the level of prompting that the target behavior is required to be performed, e.g., independently, hand over hand, with picture prompts, when provided with sign language prompts, when the teacher provides.
___ if not specifically stated in the RQ, compose a sentence that identifies how you measure the dependent variable/behavior (e.g., percentage correct, responses per minute, errors to criterion, etc.)
NOTE: Make sure your Capstone RQ follows one of these formats and includes all the highlighted variables.
How effective is [this method of teaching] (independent variable) in teaching [X number] of students with [Y-type of disabilities] in or of [in elementary/high school/ 5th grade OR of 10-14 years-old] to [behavior or skill to be taught] (dependent variable)?
Other possible formats:
How effective is __________in teaching _______students with _________ in ________to _________?
Can _______be effective in teaching _____students with _________ in _______ to ________?
Is ________effective in teaching _____ students with_______ in ______ to ____________?
Assumptions
(4 points)
___ assumptions are what need to be in place for someone to replicate your study, like the fact that the teacher has extensive professional development training in the intervention area or that the principal has given permission for the study, etc.
___ you can make a paragraph with sentences, or you can list the assumptions in list (see below APA acceptable formats for a list), as long as you compose a preceding sentence in front of the list and you write your list in sentences (not just short phrases).
Limitations
(4 points)
___ limitations are what you, as a researcher, cannot control in the study, such as the number of years that teachers have been in the classroom, the teachers’ attitudes towards RTI strategies, the educational level of the parents, or the students’ medications that affect their attention spans.
