For this literary analysis essay, you will choose and make an argument about how to interpret one of the specific questions/figures/moral dilemmas/literary formations (style, word choice, language usage) in David Henry Hwangs play, M. Butterfly or in one of Chitra Divakarunis poems. Shaping this argument will require the use of at least one outside source (please see MLA International Bibliography and/or JSTOR databases for such sources). Be sure to focus your discussion carefully upon a specific theme/figure/situation, as this is a literary essay, not a history essay.
Research support for your argument should come in the form of 1-2 secondary sources. Ideally, these sources should come from a Hellman Library database (JSTOR.org, Project Muse, Taylor & Francis, etc.) or from reliable online scholarly sources (GoogleScholar can be used). Any secondary sources used in class discussions are also welcome. You should seek out a source that gives an interpretation of something in the novel. A social history source is permitted only after you have used a piece of literary criticism. If you are uncertain, please check with the instructor.
