The cerebral cortex, where higher-order mental activities occur, progressively loses brain tissue. By age 70, 5 percent of the total brain mass is lost, by age 80, 10 percent, and by age 90, 20 percent (Minckler & Boyd, as cited in Lemme, 1995). The frontal lobe (working memory) and the hippocampus (memory) also experience progressive loss, which may account for the memory and executive deficits seen in older adults (Mittenberg et al, 1989).
What advice regarding exercise or mental tasks would you give to an older person or older family member who may be concerned with the onset of dementia or Alzheimers?
Should they take it easy and rest their mind, or is this the age to concentrate on more complicated and intricate mental tasks?
Your initial response should be at least 250-300 words and your replies to at least 2 classmates 100 words each.
All responses and replies should be in proper, current APA format.
