Is the organization’s mission clearly stated, and does it seem logical? Is it too broad or too limited?
Read the management discussion section. How has the organization performed in the past year? Point out at least five key points made in this discussion which are material. Are there major new initiatives in progress or completed this year?
Read the financial statements. How well has the organization done at raising funds, and what are the major sources? Is fundraising successful and is it growing? Does the organization rely on business-type activities to raise money?
What does the organization spend money on (activities)? What do you think of the mix of activities? Assess, doing some simple calculations, what percent of the organization’s revenue is spent on actual programs, as compared to running the organization itself.
Is there any other information provided, such as notes to the financial statements, or other supplementary information, that is useful to understanding how the organization is doing?
