you will write an essay (or letter, if this is the most effective means of communication and persuasion) that takes a specific position on a debatable campus, local, or national issue. You may, for example, defend or condemn a law on the books or in the making. In any event, you must 1) make a claim about the issue, 2) provide researched proof to back up you claim, 3) accommodate opposing views, and 4) tell your audience why the opposing argument is misguidedor, in other words, why youre right.
So who is your audience? General readers, is too broad for a three-page argument. Lets say you want to argue for (or eliminating) a vaping ban on the campus of Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Who would care about this issue? The citizens of Chandler and/or Gilbert? Some, but certainly not all. The community of retirees down in Sun Lakes? Maybe, if some are planning to take classes at CGCC. But your audience would include the students, faculty, and staff of CGCCsome of whom vape (though many dont). Which brings us to the needs and expectations of your intended audience.
Your argument must consider who, exactly, youre writing to, and why. What do you hope to accomplish in reaching this intended audience? How will you appeal to your audiences desires and sensitivities? Lets return to the vaping ban example once again. And lets say youre writing to support the continued campus-wide vaping ban. We know that vapers will be included in your intended audience, right? Talk about a tough audience. It would be unreasonable to expect yourself to persuade them all to stop vaping, but maybe you can at least get them to hear what you have to say. In any event, you dont want to ostracize or exclude anyone from your audience, so it would be unwise to say something like, Vapers obviously have sick, addictive personalities, so why do we even bother asking them to participate in this debate? Theyre stinking up the whole place with their disgusting second-hand, bubblegum-smelling genocide. The only solution is to expel them from this institution at once!
And be wary of issues that have only one solution. Complex issues often have several possible solutionsthough thats not always easy to sell on the six-oclock news.
You must research and integrate two sources into your argument. The sources may be from credible books, periodicals, journals, or newspapersany and of all which must come from the CGCC Library database. And one of your sources must reflect the views of your opposition in some way. Again, the vaping ban issue: youre supporting a vaping ban at CGCC. How can you locate research that condemns such a ban at CGCC? Well, you probably cant; you can, however, find credible sources that oppose vaping bans at other colleges and/or other public spaces.
Your essay must be a minimum of three pages in length. Anything less than three pages, even one paragraph less, will receive a failing grade. You must cite your sources according to MLA in-text citation conventions, and include a work cited page.
