The definition of the term Disaster myths is a misconception or incorrect beliefs about disasters and emergencies (Drury, Novelli & Stott, 2013). Disaster myths are typically explained and thought of as widespread as well as consequential. Unfortunately, believing such myths could have dangerous consequences especially for socially vulnerable communities. Who lack the resources and are often unprepared for a disaster. The consequences associated with these myths impact these populations socially and well as economically. From an emergency management standpoint these communities are depicted in a manner that is often inaccurate and negative. The actual events depicted are not factual but sensationalized exaggerated hyperboles that garner media attention and undermine a communitys resilience. The behavior of the masses during emergencies and disasters is usually socially organized and adaptive, with cooperation widespread among survivors, according to over 50 years of psychological, and sociological, research evidence (Drury, Novelli & Stott, 2013). The failure to acknowledge these myths diminishes greater awareness of the underlying issues and barriers that these communities face and impede disaster management, planning, learning and recovery to create a more sustainable community and population.
