SAM’S POST: I currently am working at a not-for-profit community hospital in western NY in the Operating Room as the Surgical Services Manager. I took the position in October of 2020 (last year) and have been learning a lot about the management side of nursing. I do not have any experience with financial management and thus am a little apprehensive about this course. I am optimistic that by the end of it I will have a better understanding of the financial side to management. I am collaborating with my Director to help guide me in my Practicum Project and we have decided to work on implementation of a nurse-to-nurse bedside report for OR to PACU/Floor nurses to improve patient safety. My anticipated PICOT is:

P: Surgical Patients

I: Handoff reporting at the bedside

C: Telephone report

O: Increase in patient safety and nurse communication

T: 3 Months

Question: Post-Op patients discharged to PACU/Floor, does bedside reporting increase patient safety and nurse communication compared to telephone report?

Bedside reporting is proven to improve patient safety, staff communication and nurse satisfaction at my current employer telephone reporting is the norm currently. I am looking to improve communication between the nurses and increase patient safety. My Director and CNO have been very supportive in my pursuit of this project. There are no costs to consider that I can think of for this particular project as it involves the current staff and does not implement any needed equipment.
