The logic behind assigning research papers
1. Research papers help you develop your ideas about the social world. This is part of my larger goal to help you develop your voice.
2. Writing regularly helps you improve not only your writing skills, but also your ability to think.
How to get full credit for your papers
Research papers should contain your thoughts on a topic that relates to elite crime. You can pick any topic that deals with elite crime and write a paper about it. In the past, students have profiled corporations and their crimes, investigated police brutality, and researched environmental crimes. One of the amazing things about learning is that you get to decide the direction of your paper. I want you to have complete control over the topic, as long as it deals with elite crime. Have you ever been curious about why corporate CEOs tend to have higher rates of psychopathic behavior than the general population? Write about it. Are you curious about the number of oil spills in the last 20 years? Research the topic and write about it. This is your education, so pick a topic about which you are passionate.
Explain your ideas in detail and support your ideas with evidence. Evidence can be anything from personal experience to journal research to documentaries. Each research paper should contain at least 5 academic sources. The course materials count as academic sources.
Offer an analysis by explaining how and why a particular social phenomenon occurs. If for example, you find that oil spills are a regular occurrence, dont simply speak to the number of oil spills, but also, explain why corporations continue to spill oil with little punishment.
As someone who grades thousands of papers, I can easily detect papers written the night before, especially those that have not gone through significant revision.

Be Creative and Good Luck
An A paper:
Includes a description of your topic. First describe the problem and use any relevant statistics to shed light on that problem. For example, lets say that you are researching how inequality increases elite crime. First, you will want to define inequality. What are the historical trends regarding the wealth gap in the U.S.? Is the gap widening? Then, you want to describe the increase in elite crime and how it is connected to inequality.
Include all the relevant information and provide as much detail as possible.
Includes an analysis. A solid analysis should answer the questions of how and why the social issue came to be. Here, the academic research is incredibly important. Using the above paper topic as an example, youll want to explain how inequality shapes elite crime. You could use Quinneys article to show how inequality provides the elite with the power to shape the enforcement and definition of criminal laws.
Includes at least 5 academic sources. The class readings count as academic readings.
Includes your opinions and ideas, but also is backed by evidence. Unsubstantiated opinions are just that: opinions. Your job is to convince the reader that your ideas are solid and backed by evidence.
Is well organized with a clearly articulated thesis statement and signposts in the introduction.
Is creative and written with both the heart and mind.
Good luck! I believe in your intelligence, talents and abilities. Now, its up to you.
