As stated at the beginning of this unit, for your final essay you will write about three texts, The Mere Wife, and one text from our first unit and one from second unit. These texts will be of your choosing. Clearly you can use Grendel, but are not required to. You will need to select the critical lens or lenses that you want to use. I’ve provided a longer list of critical theories here (opens in Canvas), so you’re free to use ones we have already used or select one or more new ones. You will also need to do some research on the texts you end up selecting, and finding outside sources to help you in your analysis of these texts.
You will write one three texts from across the semester, building your own argument and analyzing what we can learn about these texts, what they tell us about ourselves, and what they tell us about our larger society. You can revisit monster theory, use utopias and dystopias, or combine any of these with critical lenses like feminist theory. You must have a critical lens but you are free to select the lens you like and combine it with others as you see fit.
