Below is an explanation of the assignment and I have put some sections in all caps for emphasis–I’m not yelling at anyone.
You are to present an autoethnography. I gave you four examples above of what that looks like. You may also google autoethnography and ANY SUBJECT( I “Lakeda” included a little about myself also) you are interested in and see examples of autoethnographies on that particular subject. For the assignment, you write about your own experience and relate that to a larger social issue. This can be stories of joy or hardship. In the examples provided, one discusses the lack of connection I experienced the majority of my life and the other discusses a toxic relationship with my father to discuss the effects of poor family communication and illustrate how poor family relationships can prohibit self-acceptance. But then I also illustrate how family of choice can have a positive influence on self-acceptance. You may also look through other publications I have done to see if there is something that inspires you at https://www.researchgate.net/profile/David_Purnell (Links to an external site.)
You can literally write about anything. I do not know your story so I cannot give you much help there. In more generic terms, you could write about the fact that going to college is a struggle, but so worth it once you get a career started or you can write about the family expectations of being the first in your family to go to college, and how that drives you to succeed.
It is a personal narrative that you use to bring into focus a discussion on a larger social issue or even something positive that you celebrate. It is then integrated with theory to promote your overall view or desired communication with your reader.
While many autoethnographies help people navigate through grief, I do not want anyone to feel like they have to re-live trauma. Autoethnography can also be celebratory and positive. For example, you can write about how adoption can bring joy to a family that is unable to have children, or the education that travel provides such as how a wonderful trip you have taken left an amazing impression on you about a different cultures or subcultures.
You need 4 citations but they cant be .com .org or .net. These are NEVER good sources for any college level work. You may have these resources, but they do not count toward the four required. You need academic peer-reviewed journal articles for your research. If you do not know what a peer-reviewed article is, then I suggest you contact the library and ask for assistance from a librarian. In short though, you go to the library site. You go to databases, I suggest Academic Search Complete. On the left-hand side of the screen there will be some boxes. One should say something about peer reviewed. Click on it, and then do a search on your subject. Let’s say you are research depression in first year college students. Then put that in your search bar and (since you clicked peer reviewed) you will receive only peer reviewed articles. Now you may use .com, .net, .org sources, but they do not count toward the four required resources. AGAIN, you should never use Google to do research. If for some reason you are of the mindset to refuse to use the library site (not recommended), you can go to Google Scholar. This mostly gives you peer reviewed work. They often try to charge you to read an article though. If you find an article you like, copy and paste the title of the article into the library site (where you should have started anyway) and see if the library has access to it.
The BIGGEST thing is to make sure you follow APA formatting, have excellent resources for your research, have it cited properly, have an excellent reference page with hanging indents, and a complete title page (see the example provided). Your entire paper should be double-spaced. Never any extra spacing and never use any single spacing. Only the title page has an extra spacing on it. (Again, see the example provided).
Read my examples or examples from the internet to see how to blend research into your narrative. DO NOT GIVE ME A NARRATIVE WITH RESEARCH TACKED ON AT THE END.
