We are all connected–our history, our culture, and our arts. As a part of your final exam, choose one artwork from the period and regions covered in class and in a 500 word essay, discuss it as an example of Post-Modernism –the larger intersection of new ideas, materials, and styles in the 20th and 21st century world.
It can be a work from any culture covered in class from 1800 to the present, but it should represent ideas and influences (cultural contexts) from at least TWO distinct parts of the globe (i.e., Europe and America, Europe and Asia, Asia and the Americas).
First, what is the work you have chosen? Give name, date, artist (if applicable), material, and approximate dimensions. Describe in detail, and give an overview of its cultural context. How does it represent the values or style of its original culture?
Second, how is it connected to the larger world? What are the materials, subjects, or ideas that have been imported from other places? How did those new elements arrive, and how were they transformed?
Third, what does that intersection of ideas say about the larger cultural/historical context at the time? And what does the work mean for us today?
Make sure to use a minimum of two named authors as outside sources for your information. Start with the sources listed in the modules, as they are some of the most thorough and reliable. Your textbook is required reading and therefore NOT acceptable as one of your additional sources of information.
