The aim is this assessment is to develop a collective understanding of local and regional development challenges in the Teesside region, drawing on debates in Part 1 of the module. We will achieve this through group work and the preparation of podcasts on selected themes.
Teesside is a region that has undergone structural economic change over several decades and contains some of the most disadvantaged areas in the UK. It remains an important manufacturing economy but is attempting to develop new industries. It has experienced devolution recently in the form of a new Metro-Mayor who is up for re-election in May. The region is also the focus on significant policy interventions by the UK government, notably in the form of the proposed creation of Freeport.
