This essay exam provides an added opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of the key concepts and issues covered in the course through readings, lectures, and class discussions. While the exam requires application of concepts / ideas / and approaches discussed at the beginning of the course (i.e., the sociological imagination. culture, socialization, sociological theoretical lenses, etc), it is focused on the final chapters of the book (i.e., family, religion, and education). There will be NO alternate assignments to earn points normally earned through this final exam. Follow the guidelines below when preparing for your final exam.
Focus for the final exam:
Compare and contrast how the family, religion, and the educational system (i.e., purpose and functions within the context of our society) is likely to be described by symbolic interaction, functionalist-structural, and conflict theory.
Be sure to begin with an introduction (i.e., topic, thesis, and how the content is organized) (5%)
Be sure to describe the assumptions (i.e., beliefs and expectations) promoted by each of these perspectives (30%)
Be sure to describe the strengths and limitations of each of these perspectives (30%)
Construct an argument regarding which of these theories best describe the complexities of the family, religion, and educational system (30%)
Conclusion (5%)
During your exam, make sure that you integrate concepts regarding the family, religion, and education discussed in the readings, and class lectures and discussions. This exam is open book and will have a limit time of four hours once you begin the exam in canvas. Responses must be clear, well-organized, and concrete / descriptive. Responses must be supported by a rationale / descriptive analysis. A good rationale / descriptive analysis is often strengthened by the use of examples.
